Meet the team behind the Shortbox Comics Knowledge Base.

Shortbox Comics is an independent comic book retailer from the Netherlands, specializing in American comic books, pre-orders, back issues, exclusive variants, signed comics, CGC-graded books, trade paperbacks and omnibus editions.

Since our start in 2018, we have handled more than 100,000 comic books and helped collectors across Europe discover, build and understand their collections. Every week we process thousands of comics through our webshop, pre-order system, online sales, convention appearances and community channels.

That hands-on experience is the foundation of the Shortbox Comics Knowledge Base: a growing library of factual, practical and easy-to-understand comic book guides written for collectors, readers and fans.

Our Story

Shortbox Comics was created with one clear goal: to make collecting comics easier and more enjoyable. Comic collecting can be exciting, but it can also be confusing. First prints, later printings, ratio variants, key issues, CGC grades, pre-orders and retailer exclusives all come with their own rules, history and terminology.

We believe collectors make better decisions when they have access to clear and reliable information. That is why we combine our webshop with educational content, personal advice and an active comic community.

Meet Marcel and Sam

Behind Shortbox Comics is Marcel Brilman, founder of Shortbox Comics and a lifelong comic collector. Marcel has over 35 years of experience with American comics, collection valuation, key issues, back issues, pre-orders and comic book grading. His practical knowledge comes from working with collections, customers and comic books every day.

Working alongside Marcel is Sam, a huge DC fan, who helps manage the daily operations, webshop, customer service, order processing and the constant flow of new comic releases. Together, Marcel and Sam work to make Shortbox Comics a reliable place for collectors who want more than just a product page.

The Shortbox Sidekicks

Shortbox Comics is also supported by a group of familiar faces many customers already know from conventions, online sales and community events.

Hendrie, Roy, Frank and Peter are part of the Shortbox Comics sidekick crew. You may meet them at comic conventions, during online sales, at special events or behind the scenes helping the community run smoothly.

Each of them brings their own personality, collecting interests and comic knowledge to the team. Together they help create the relaxed, friendly and passionate atmosphere that makes Shortbox Comics more than just a webshop.

Official Heroes Dutch Comic Con Partner

In June 2026, Shortbox Comics became an official Heroes Dutch Comic Con Partner. This partnership strengthens our role within the Dutch and European comic book community.

As part of this partnership, we organize the Shortbox Comics Artist Kiosk at Heroes Dutch Comic Con. This is a dedicated place where visitors can buy comics and meet comic creators, attend signings, discover artist comics, find convention exclusives and learn more about the creative process behind the comics they love.

Our close collaboration with convention organizers, artists managers, publishers and collectors gives us valuable insight into the comic industry. That experience helps us keep the Shortbox Comics Knowledge Base practical, relevant and rooted in the real world of comic collecting.

Why We Created the Shortbox Comics Knowledge Base

The comic book hobby is full of information, but not all of it is clear, current or correct. Many collectors want to know what makes a comic important, how grading works, why variants exist, how pre-orders are handled or what the difference is between a reprint, facsimile and later printing.

The Shortbox Comics Knowledge Base was created to answer those questions in a clear and useful way.

Our goal is not to speculate or hype. Our goal is to explain the hobby based on facts, experience and careful research.

How We Research Our Articles

Every article in the Shortbox Comics Knowledge Base is written with collectors in mind. We use our own daily experience and check facts against reliable sources where needed, including official publisher information, creator credits, distributor details, grading standards, historical references and industry announcements.

When information changes, we review and update our guides where necessary. Comic collecting keeps evolving, and our Knowledge Base is built to evolve with it.
